Student Traditions

On September 1 st here in Russia we celebrate the Day of Knowledge. After long summer holidays, the universities open their doors for students. There are many traditions in Surgut State University. At the beginning of the academic year, the students light the «flame of knowledge» and go through the gates, holding their hands. They do that to have good luck with their studies.

At the end of September, all students gather together for a tourist rally. Young people participate in creative and physical activities in the territory of Saima Park, located not far from the University. Russia is a multinational country. More than 120 nationalities live in Ugra. A tourist rally is a great way to get accustomed to each other’s cultural traditions and try various dishes.

New students can demonstrate their talents at the annual creative contest "Freshman’s Debut". Young people dance, sing, stage performances, recite poems, and even make videos.

For example, for almost a year our students have been shooting the music video to the song "I am a student of Surgut State University" composed by Asif Mamedov. Do you think it deserves the award?

The competitions “The Beauty of Surgut State University” and “Mr Surgut State University” are among the University’s traditional creative events when we choose not only beautiful and talented students but also the most intelligent ones.

And how do we encourage students paying great attention to their studies? For such hard-working and motivated people, we hold an annual competition “The Best Academic Group”. The students of the Medical Institute have won the title of ‘The Best Academic Group” during two years in a row. But, as Russians say, “Picture’s worth a thousand words!” So, watch the video that the students have shot for the contest! The winners of the contest “The Best Academic Group” are awarded with a winter holiday tour to the cultural capital of Russia — St. Petersburg.

We have also Science Day in Russia celebrated annually at the beginning of February. The students take part in the event not only by presenting the results of their research, but also participating in the dance party – The Ball of Science. The young researchers including students and lectures dance a waltz, polonaise and mazurka enjoying the live music performed by the Surgut Philharmonic orchestra.

Beforehand, each participant has a chance to write down a single wish on a piece of paper putting it in a rotating drum. When the Ball comes to an end, the Rector of the University chooses three wishes to be fulfilled.

The students have got lots of opportunities to demonstrate their talents throughout a whole year. During the first warm days the University holds one of the most popular events called “The Students’ Spring Festival”.

At the end of the academic year, the senior students can compete for the title “The Best SurGU Graduate” and get a chance to be hired by one of the city-forming companies. To win the competition the participants have to present themselves, the results of their scientific activity and the acquired professional skills in the best way.

Having worked hard and got excellent marks in all the exams, the students are awarded with Diplomas with Honours at the University Solemn Ceremony.

And what tradition would you like to be a part of?
