Surgut State University was founded in May 1993. The main goal of the development of the University is transformation into a new type of university, supporting and providing innovative economic development of the region through concentration of intellectual potential, modern scientific and educational infrastructure and their approach to the needs of regional business.
The university implements programs of higher education of all levels on a wide range of areas and specialties on the basis of six educational and scientific institutions: Humanitarian Education and Sport, the State and Law, Natural and Technical Sciences, Economics and Management, Medical and Polytechnic Institutions. The principles of continuous education are being introduced, and training clusters "school - college - university - enterprise" are built. Professional retraining and further training of specialists is carried out
The priority areas of the research activities of the University are: IT-technologies, Oil chemistry, Nature management, Ecology, Medicine of the North. The University has the largest scientific library in the region with the fund of over 600 000 volumes.
The SSU Board of Trustees includes the representatives of business, administrative, social and political circles of Surgut, the deputies of the Federal, Tyumen Regional and Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area legislative assemblies, Surgut City Council.
The university has good traditions of student self-government. The graduates of Surgut State University are in demand, the most part of young specialists have been employed in the region.
